Unfortunately, Sylvia Lett will be unable to join us for this presentation. We are grateful to Kina Harding for stepping in to present with Pearlette.

To celebrate both Black History Month in February and Women's History Month in March, we will have a presentation from two attorneys on being your authentic self.  What does that mean?  In Psychology Today, Tchiki Davis, Ph.D., says that "[b]eing authentic means that you act in ways that show your true self and how you feel."  (Click her name to see the article.)  Take a journey with Pearlette on finding your authentic self while practicing law.

Pearlette J. Ramos is originally from Youngstown, Ohio. Pearlette overcame significant obstacles including poverty, abuse, teenage motherhood, and dropping out of high school to become the first in her family to graduate from college and earn two doctoral degrees.  In addition to being a lawyer, she is a motivational speaker, coach, writer and travel influencer. Dr. Ramos serves as the Corporate Compliance Officer and Deputy Assistant Director with the Arizona Department of Economic Security-Division of Developmental Disabilities, a managed care organization that provides integrated physical and behavioral care for 44,000 members within a $2 billion budget.  Pearlette is a feminist at heart!  She guides women on transformational journeys around the world, facilitates leadership development programs, and coaches and empowers women to live life with purpose and from a place of authenticity. Pearlette is working on her first documentary —The Three Women Project---which tells the struggles and triumphs of three women of color as they trek up Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain in Tanzania, Africa. Dr. Ramos is a member of the several boards including OneAZ Credit Union, the Arizona Black Bar Association, and Sisters Talk About Race—a nonprofit she cofounded that seeks to eradicate systemic racism and create sustainable social change. She is passionate about connecting, educating and supporting women to lead in business, government, and civic organizations!  Committed to serving others, Pearlette graduated from Case Western Reserve University-School of Law in 1995.  She returned to school after fifteen years of law practice and earned a Ph.D. in Psychology.  Her dissertation, Well-Being:  A Study of Attorney Beliefs, Attitudes, and Perceptions (2012), takes a critical look at the factors that influence well-being among Arizona lawyers.  Pearlette has been a member of AWLA since 2013.

Kina Harding is a family law attorney at The Harding Firm.  While she has built her legal career by focusing on all of loves’ tragic side effects – divorce, custody, parenting time, child support, and grandparent’s rights – all her personal projects focus on helping children. Every year, Kina organizes and executes a school supply drive and a food drive to help families in the Mesa/Gilbert area ensure that their children have the essentials necessary to be in the best possible position to succeed and become productive adults.  Kina serves the legal community by volunteering with the Family Lawyer’s Assistance Project, giving free legal advice to pro bono clients. She serves on the Maricopa County Bar Association Bench and Bar Committee facilitating a candid conversation between attorneys and judges. Kina also serves on the Maricopa County Bar Association Diversity Committee, which strives to enhance the diversity in the legal profession. Kina has been inducted into the “Top 40 Under 40″ Trial Attorneys.  She attended American University and Pepperdine University School of Law.  She is a proud graduate of 2019 Mesa Leadership, Bar Leadership Institute (a program dedicated to helping lawyers hone their leadership skills), Ladder Down, Arizona State University’s Sparxx 2016 Class of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and Mesa Leadership 2019. Kina recently finished the Interaction Management Associates Mediation training to become a mediator and a parenting coordinator.  She studies and facilitates dialogue on the influence of race and ethnicity in developing perspectives and how those perspectives impact American culture and progress. She is a former president of the Arizona Black Bar; her administration focused on increasing the number of Arizona Black Bar participants on Boards and Commissions. Kina currently serves on Mesa Police Department’s Critical Incident Review Board, where the Board reviews cases to determine if there was inappropriate police contact if said contact results in a civilian injury or there was a questionable use of force. Ms. Harding serves on Mesa United Way Board and College Bound AZ Board – a program dedicated to supporting disadvantage youth to apply, attend, and excel in college. She volunteers on the Speaker’s Bureau for Feed My Starving Children and she routinely participates in outreach through Mount Calvary Baptist Church. She is also an active member of the Kiwanis Downtown Mesa, where she was awarded Kiwanis Member of the year for the 2018 year. In 2019, Kina was recognized in Black Girls Rock: Foundation Builders, for serving the East Valley community. Kina resides locally, with her son Bryce, her Boerboel D’Ogee, and her tortoise named Bird.
