This presentation covers common punctuation, grammar, and style matters when it comes to legal writing. First, we will briefly address the ramifications lawyers face when their writing is not up to par. Next, we will cover a few topics to help improve your legal writing: transitions, comma splices, serial commas, passive voice, and parallelism.

Diana J. Simon was a commercial litigator for 25 years at both large and small firms in Los Angeles, Tucson, and Washington, D.C. During that time, she developed an ornery personality, so she decided to retire and teach fulltime at the University of Arizona where she is an Associate Clinical Professor of Law and legal writing professor. While her goal has been to turn into an affable person, she has largely failed. Inspired by her students’ struggles with legal writing, she has authored a book entitled, “The (Not Too Serious) Grammar, Punctuation, and Style Guide to Legal Writing,” which will be published in November of 2022. It is a humorous yet informative style guide useful for both law students and lawyers alike.
