As we near 100 years of women's voting rights in the United States, AWLA member Judge Schroeder will discuss where women are today in law, politics and business.
Judge Schroeder is a Senior Circuit Judge on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. She served as the circuit’s first female Chief Judge from 2000 to 2007. She received her undergraduate degree from Swarthmore College and her J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School. When she graduated from law school, she was one of just six women in her class. She became a trial lawyer for the Department of Justice, then clerked for Justice Jesse Udall at the Arizona Supreme Court. In 1971 she joined Lewis and Roca (now Lewis Roca Rothgerber Christie), the first (and then only) female associate at a major Arizona law firm. She became a partner there in 1973. In 1975, she was appointed to the Arizona Court of Appeals, the first woman on that court, where she served until 1979. President Carter nominated her to the Ninth Circuit in 1979, where she became the first woman from Arizona to be appointed to that Circuit.
She is a recipient of the Arizona State Bar Association’s James A. Walsh Outstanding Jurist Award and the American Bar Association’s Margaret Brent Award. She was President of the National Association of Women Judges from 1998 to 1999. The Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law established the Mary M. Schroeder Public Interest Award in 2007 to commemorate her 30 years of devoted service to the 9th Circuit and the greater legal community.
In order to receive the pre-paid luncheon price of $20 for members/$30 for non-members/$15 for law students, you MUST pre-pay with your credit card on the website BY THE RSVP DEADLINE. DO NOT MAIL IN CHECKS. If you make a reservation but do not pay on the website with your credit card, you must pay an additional $5 by check or cash at the door ($25 members/$35 non-members/$20 law students). If you cancel after the registration deadline, or do not show up for a luncheon for which you have registered, and you have not paid, you will be billed at the "at the door" price. We pay for the number of meals we guarantee so we must bill you.
There IS such a thing as a free lunch, at least for guests of current AWLA members!
