APPLY:

The Tempe Municipal Court, acting on the behalf of the East Valley Regional Veterans Court
(EVRVC) and its participating municipalities, is seeking a Judge Pro Tem to preside over the
EVRVC, $75 per hour. The Judge will preside over criminal misdemeanor hearings for veterans
assigned to the EVRVC to include: Pretrial conferences and motion hearings. Review requests
for continuances; Grant or deny requests; Correspond with non-local defendants for case
disposition by mail when appropriate; Perform legal research; Set bail and issue orders regarding
disposition of arrested persons; Exercise considerable independent judgment; Apply thorough
knowledge of Arizona criminal law, City ordinances, and related laws and regulations applicable
to a municipal court.
• Practicing attorney for a minimum of 5 years. This experience must be comprehensive
enough to ensure the ability to perform the duties of the position as illustrated above.
• Graduate of an accredited law school.

• Member in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona for a minimum of 5 years.
• Available to cover weekly EVRVC dockets on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Knowledge in the following areas:

• Military Justice and Administrative separation procedures.
• Military treatment programs to include medical discharge procedures, substance abuse
treatment and domestic violence treatment.
• VA medical treatment programs and VA benefits including; service-connected disability
compensation, vocational rehabilitation and housing programs.
• Criminal misdemeanor law.

Experience in the following areas:
• Interaction with Elected Officials and with Senior Government Officials, to include Federal
Senior Executive Service officials.
• Public speaking before Civic and Veterans Organizations.
• Veteran status.
• Prior Judge Pro Tem experience.

APPLY:

The Tempe Municipal Court is seeking on-call Judges Pro Tem to serve in the absence of regular
Municipal Court Judges, including weekends and holidays. $75 per hour.

Preside over a variety of hearings including criminal misdemeanor and traffic arraignments;

juvenile alcohol, driving and curfew arraignments; criminal jury and non-jury trials; orders of
protection hearings and harassment injunctions; pretrial conferences and motion hearings.

Review requests for continuances; grant or deny requests. Review search warrants, sign or
reject warrants. Review and sign summons, subpoenas, arrest warrants and other court orders.

Review financial disclosure statements. Correspond with non-local defendants for case
disposition by mail when appropriate. Perform legal research. Set bail and issue orders regarding
disposition of arrested persons.

Exercise considerable independent judgment. Apply thorough

knowledge of Arizona criminal law, City ordinances, and related laws and regulations applicable
to a municipal court. Preside over in-custody dockets both during the week and on weekends
and/or holidays.

• Practicing attorney for a minimum of 5 years. This experience must be comprehensive
enough to ensure the ability to perform the duties of the position as illustrated above.

• Graduate of an accredited law school.

• Member in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona for a minimum of 5 years.

• Criminal law experience required; misdemeanor experience preferred.

• Prior Judge Pro Tem experience is desirable.

MUNICIPAL COURT JUDGE

The City of Phoenix Judicial Selection Advisory Board is currently accepting applications for the position of City Judge for the Phoenix Municipal Court. The Court is currently recruiting for two judicial vacancies, with the possibility that this recruitment will be used to fill additional vacancies that may arise in the future.

DUTIES: Preside over a variety of trial court cases including criminal misdemeanor complaints, traffic charges, jury and non-jury trials, pre-trial conferences, arraignments, motions, orders of protection, injunctions, and other court proceedings. The position requires familiarity and application of relevant state statutes, city ordinances, Arizona Supreme Court rules, evidentiary rules and case law. Phoenix, AZ – Today, Governor Katie Hobbs announced that she will be making three appointments to the Maricopa County Superior Court.

Janette Corral is a graduate of Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law and has over a decade of experience working in the Maricopa County court system. Her extensive professional experience includes eight years with the Maricopa County Public Defender’s Office—three as a Deputy Public Defender and five as an attorney in the Criminal Mental Health Unit. For the last four years, Judge Corral has served as a Commissioner for the Maricopa County Superior Court.

Nicole Hartley is a graduate from Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law. For over 10 years, she served as a Deputy Public Defender for the Maricopa County Public Defender’s Office. Judge Hartley has served as a Commissioner for the Maricopa County Superior Court since 2021.

Brian Palmer is a graduate from the University of Arizona’s James E. Rogers College of Law. Judge Palmer has over 10 years of experience in private practice in civil and commercial litigation. He also served as Senior Civil Litigation Counsel for the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office prior to his appointment as a Commissioner for the Maricopa County Superior Court in 2020.

PHOENIX - Applications are being accepted for a vacancy on the Superior Court in Coconino County created by the upcoming retirement of Hon. Elaine Fridlund-Horne. 

 

The Coconino County Commission on Trial Court Appointments will review applications, interview selected applicants, and recommend at least three nominees for the vacancy to Gov. Katie Hobbs, who will appoint the new judge.

 

The most current judicial application form can be downloaded at the Judicial Department website: azcourts.gov/jnc [azcourts.gov]. Applications may also be obtained from the Administrative Office of the Courts, Human Resources Department, 1501 W. Washington, Suite 221, Phoenix, by calling (602) 452-3311, or by sending an email request to jnc@courts.az.gov

 

Applicants must be at least 30 years of age, of good moral character, admitted to the practice of law in, and a resident of Arizona for the past five years and a resident of Coconino County for the past year.

 

A signed original application with all attachments and a searchable PDF version of the application and attachments must be submitted to the Administrative Office of the Courts, Human Resources Department, 1501 W. Washington, Suite 221, Phoenix, AZ, 85007, by3 p.m. on Mar. 31, 2025.  Please review the application instructions for guidance on submitting your electronic application.

 

Applicants for the previous vacancy in Coconino County DO NOT need to reapply to be considered for the new vacancy.

 

The Commission may, at its discretion, use the applications filed for this vacancy to nominate candidates for any additional vacancies known to the Commission before the screening meeting for this vacancy is held.  

 

All meetings of the Coconino County Commission on Trial Court Appointments are open to the public. Meeting dates will be announced. 

 

The current annual salary of a Superior Court judge is $190,000.
