IMPLICIT BIAS IN THE LEGAL SYSTEM

PRESENTED BY

VIRJINYA TORREZ,
ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL FOR THE PASCUA YAQUI TRIBE

Register by Saturday, October 17, 2020

ETHICS CLE OFFERED*

This program will examine some of the ways in which systemic inequities are upheld in the legal system through engaging in discussion regarding such topics as implicit bias, prejudice, and microaggressions. The program will also detail ways in which discriminatory practices, whether intentional or not, might run afoul of Arizona's Rules of Professional Conduct.

Participants should come away with knowledge of:
1. How to recognize and discuss systemic inequities in the legal setting;
2. How to evaluate their own actions in upholding or dismantling systemic inequities, and how to hold others accountable;
3. The ethical pitfalls of un-examined and/or intentional bias.

Virjinya Torrez is an Assistant Attorney General for the Pascua Yaqui Tribe, a federally recognized Indian tribe located southwest of Tucson, Arizona. Her work for the Tribe is varied, but she primarily represents the Tribe’s Public Safety, Human Resources, Education, Enrollment, TGO, Veterans Affairs, Finance and Facilities Management Departments and programs; and serves as secondary representation to the Tribe's Health, Social Services, and Economic and Community Development Departments.

Virjinya serves as an appointed State Bar of Arizona representative on the DNA - People’s Legal Services, Inc. Board of Directors, and as the Bar's representative to the Arizona State, Tribal & Federal Court Forum. She also serves as the Secretary for the Tribal In-House Counsel Association (TICA). She is a 2016 graduate of the State Bar of Arizona's Bar Leadership Institute, and is a Past Chair of the State Bar of Arizona’s Indian Law Section. She is also “mom” to 3 boys: ages 22, 10, and 5.

Virjinya earned both her J.D. and her M.A. in American Indian Studies at the University of Arizona, and she earned her B.A. in Political Science (specializing in International Relations) and East Asian Studies at the University of Iowa, with certificates in International Business and American Indian and Native Studies. She is admitted to practice in both the federal and state courts of Arizona, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Tohono O’odham Judicial Court, and the Pascua Yaqui Tribal Court.

Virjinya is Cherokee/Seminole/Muscogee Creek, and is an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma.

*The State Bar of Arizona does not approve or accredit CLE activities for the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education requirement.  This activity may qualify for up to 1.0 hour toward your annual CLE requirement for the State Bar of Arizona, including 1.0 hour of professional responsibility.
