Dear AWLA Members,

Regretfully, AWLA has learned that Judge Claudette C. White, who was going to present on Monday, January 25, has tested positive for Covid-19. Judge White said that we could disclose her Covid-positive status. This is a reminder to us all that we are still very much in the grips of a pandemic and we must all do what we can to keep ourselves and each other safe. We all wish Judge White a speedy recovery and look forward to rescheduling her presentation this spring.

Rather than cancel Monday’s CLE virtual lunch, Carolyn Williams, Associate Professor of Legal Writing & Assistant Clinical Professor of Law, University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law and Christina Billhartz, 3L Law Student, Arizona Law, have kindly agreed to present on “Bluebook Updates: Important Changes to Legal Citation.” Carolyn and Christina will present on the 21st edition of The Bluebook, which was recently released with significant changes. They recently gave this presentation at the State Bar and it was very well-received. AWLA thanks Carolyn and Christina for stepping in on such short notice so that we could still have Monday’s event.

More importantly, AWLA again wishes Judge White a complete and quick recovery. Stay safe everyone.

Claudette C. White is an Associate Judge for the Quechan Tribal Court located in Winterhaven, CA and Yuma, AZ. She has been on the bench for (14) years and has worked to help ensure justice to her community by collaborating with local and neighboring jurisdictions, working with stakeholders to develop new alternatives and by making efforts to educate state counterparts about tribal courts to ensure tribal court recognition and to strengthen comity.

Judge White is a graduate of Northern Arizona University in Criminal Justice and received her J.D. from the Sandra Day O'Conner School of Law at Arizona State University.

She serves as an appointed member to the California Tribal and State Court Forum, is the Vice President of the California Tribal Court Judges Association, is a Board Member for the Native American Indian Court Judges Association, as well as a member of the California Child Welfare Council, and a Board Member for Sovereign Bodies Institute.

Judge White has been working to incorporate concepts of restorative justice in her court by utilizing tribal custom and tradition and focuses on alternatives to standard punitive measures.
