MARICOPA CHAPTER COMMITTEES:
The Judicial Appointments Committee helps members become judges on the Arizona Appellate Courts. Committee members attend all meetings of the appellate court nominating commission that selects applicants to recommend to the Governor for appointment. The committee keeps notes on comments made about applications received and about interviews of potential nominees. It maintains a list of questions commonly asked and tracks trends in applications and appointments. The committee also provides mock interview opportunities, feedback to interested applicants, arranges regular seminars to educate members about the application, interview and appointment process, and keeps the membership informed about recent vacancies and appointments.
The Leadership Appointments Committee assists members with appointments to board and commissions in the community.
The Luncheon Committee schedules speakers for the Maricopa Chapter’s membership meetings and luncheons at the University Club, where members gather to catch up with old friends and make new ones. Committee members work together to select relevant, timely topics and take turns securing speakers. CLE is generally offered at the luncheons, which are usually held on the last Wednesday of the month. There are no luncheons in June and November, and our December luncheon is held on the second Wednesday of the month. Due to COVID-19, the meetings are being held via Zoom at this time.
The Membership Committee tracks new memberships and renewals and concentrates on serving the needs of both existing and potential AWLA members. This committee's goal is to ensure that the chapter evolves with its constituency and continues to be of service by tracking the benefits of membership and finding new benefits and advantages to offer.
The Mother's Forum Committee is dedicated to making the profession a better place for lawyer moms. This is accomplished through various initiatives, including drafting and disseminating information on best practices for working mothers; inviting speakers to discuss the law and motherhood, including networking, work-life balance, and developments in law and policy affecting mothers; and developing mentoring relationships. In addition, the Mother's Forum Committee hosts family-friendly activities at kid-friendly locations. Due to COVID-19, meetings are being held via Zoom at this time.
The Professional Development Committee is dedicated to providing members opportunities for business development, client development, networking, and personal growth in a professional context. The Committee is currently developing a program to provide professional development opportunities specific to women attorneys’ needs and to further the AWLA’s mission of promoting and encouraging the success of women lawyers. This program will include a variety of programs and events including formal CLE and non-CLE seminars, informal presentations, and happy hour events. Due to COVID-19, events are being held via Zoom at this time.
The Social Committee creates and organizes special events designed to give members the opportunity to meet outside of work. The events offer networking for professional development and friendship for personal satisfaction. In addition, it provides members opportunities to widen their circle of friends with attorneys, judges and other colleagues who understand the challenges and rewards of practicing law. During COVID-19, the committee has offered socially-distanced hikes and is looking for ideas on how to socialize remotely.
The Wine & Cheese Committee organizes the chapter's signature annual event—the Wine and Cheese Reception, open to members and non-members alike, at which AWLA honors an individual who has contributed to the advancement of women in the legal profession with the Ruth V. McGregor Award. The committee handles all facets of the event, from selecting the honoree, to planning the reception, to coordinating sponsorship and staffing the event. Past honorees include Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Rebecca White Berch, Justice Ann Scott Timmer, and former Chief Justice Ruth V. McGregor, the Hon. Mary Schroeder, former Chief Judge of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals; and former Governors Jane Dee Hull and Janet Napolitano. The Reception is usually held in October or November of each year. Due to COVID-19, the Reception was not held in 2020. We are hoping to have the Reception in 2021 if conditions permit.
