PRO BONO PANEL ETHICS CLE

MONDAY, MAY 17, 2021 AT NOON

VIA ZOOM

Ethics CLE Offered*

Register by Sunday, May 16, 2021

In order to promote our members’ ability to find meaningful Pro Bono opportunities, AWLA will host a panel featuring representatives from Southern Arizona Legal Aid (SALA), Step Up To Justice, and Keep Tucson Together.  Panelists will discuss their organization’s mission, the types of volunteer opportunities available, any training requirements, and how to volunteer.  Susan Daicoff,  Director of Volunteer Lawyers Program at SALA, will also provide information on limited scope representation and the rules for licensure in Arizona for retired and out-of-state attorneys seeking to work pro bono.  This will be our last CLE lunch before we break for the summer.

VLP Director Susan Daicoff joined the team at Volunteer Lawyers Program at Southern Arizona Legal Aid, Inc. in June, 2020 after 23 years as a law professor. Her last five years she was the Director of Legal Clinical Programs supervising multiple clinics in Phoenix. Most recently she served as a court administrator and judge pro tem with Maricopa County Justice Courts. She has been a licensed attorney since 1984 and is an experienced educator, author, speaker, mediator, and administrator. Her areas of expertise are law as a healing profession, therapeutic jurisprudence, professional ethics, and lawyer wellbeing and personality. More recently she has focused on access to justice and innovative, empowering approaches to delivering legal services. Her daughter works in educational information technology and her son graduates May, 2021 from the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law, with a focus on representing clients in veterans’ clinic and court.

Jenna Johnson is a 2016 graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center and was admitted to the State Bar of Arizona that year; she earned her B.S. from the University of Montevallo in 2012.  Ms. Johnson was a Law Clerk to the Honorable Joan L. Wagener of the Pima County Superior Court, 2016-2017 and prior to that a Law Clerk at the Federal Defender, Middle District of Alabama and the Alexandria Public Defender in Alexandria, Virginia. Ms. Johnson is a Felony Trial Attorney with the Pima County Public Defender and Volunteer Attorney with Keep Tucson Together/No More Deaths representing non-citizens in removal proceedings since 2017.

Melissa Spiller-Shiner has worked in civil legal services since 2010.  She has a B.A. in Sociology from Binghamton University, an M.A. in Ethics, Peace & Global Affairs from American University, and a J.D. from the University of Arizona.  Prior to joining Step Up To Justice, Melissa worked as a staff attorney at another Tucson-based civil legal services provider in their Consumer, Housing, & Public Benefits unit assisting low income clients with landlord/tenant and bankruptcy matters.  She then moved to the Volunteer Lawyers Program as their Staff Attorney and Law Student Coordinator, managing court and student-based clinics to assist self-represented litigants navigate the court process.

As the Associate Director of Step Up To Justice, Melissa works with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors to develop and implement the vision and direction for SU2J.

*The State Bar of Arizona does not approve or accredit CLE activities for the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education requirement.  This activity may qualify for up to 1.0 hour toward your annual CLE requirement for the State Bar of Arizona, including 1.0 hour of professional responsibility.
